Plantar Warts

Nearly everyone will develop a wart on their feet or other part of their body at some time in their life. Plantar (foot) warts are non-cancerous skin lesions that are caused by a viral infection from a strain of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). They are more common in children but can occur on your feet at any age. Warts can easily be mistaken for calluses or other skin problems and can often cause pain or tenderness.

Since warts are caused by a virus, they can often be very difficult to treat and require special care. Most warts can be treated with conservative and topical treatments but they occasionally require more aggressive methods including surgery. The earlier you treat plantar warts, the more likely you are to clear them up with conservative care.

We can evaluate your skin lesions, and if they are wart, can make sure you get the best treatments available.

Here are some common signs that let you know if you may have a wart:

  • Lesions are commonly about the size of a pencil eraser but can be bigger or smaller depending on how long they have been there.

  • Warts can be a single lesion or grow in clusters

  • They are usually tender, especially in areas of pressure

  • Mature warts often appear to have block dots on them. These black dots are blood vessels that appear in the wart.

  • Warts are contagious and can spread from person to person or to other parts of your body.
