Diabetic Foot Care

If you or your family members have been diagnosed with diabetes, your blood sugar levels are too high. Elevated blood glucose can cause damage to many different organs in your body, including your nerves and blood vessels. Nerve damage can cause loss of feeling in your feet. This can lead to injuries and wounds that aren’t noticed until serious problems occur. Foot injuries such as these can cause ulcers and infections. Some cases may even lead to amputation if not treated quickly enough. Damage to the blood vessels can also mean that your feet do not get enough blood and oxygen. Without these things, your feet can have a difficult time healing.

What you can do to keep your feet healthy:

  • Try to perform a daily foot check. If you can’t reach your feet, have a family member check them for you or put a mirror on the ground to check the bottom of them.

  • Keep your feet clean. Daily cleansing with soap and water will help prevent infections. Unless instructed by your podiatrist, there is no need to use harsh chemicals like bleach.

  • See your podiatrist before trying to trim your own toenails. Your doctor can instruct you on whether it is safe to clip them yourself. If not, we may be able to provide that service for you.

  • Protect your feet from hot and cold. Extreme temperatures can harm your feet and some symptoms of diabetes can lead to decreased sensation.

  • Wear appropriate shoes. Patients with diabetes need to be extra careful about find shoes that fit correctly. Supportive shoe gear with enough room for your toes will help prevent foot problems. Some patients may even qualify for prescription shoes.

Along with your other doctors, your podiatrist can help you prevent foot issues related to diabetes. We will work closely with your Primary Care doctor, Vascular Surgeon and Endocrinologist to provide you with comprehensive care for your feet and body. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you should schedule an appointment with Dr. Pierson for a regular diabetic foot checkup.
