Corns & Calluses

Calluses on feet

Corns and calluses can be painful and disrupt our lives, especially if we want to be active or if we spend a lot of time on our feet. They are usually the result of repetitive friction or areas of high pressure and can occur in areas where our shoes are too tight and restrictive or when something is pressing too hard on a certain part of our foot. Sometimes, areas of pressure are also caused by other bones in our feet.

Genetics can also play a part. Some people are more likely to develop calluses than others and may need special treatments that would normal not be necessary for people without that family history. Whatever the cause of your corns and calluses, we can help you find the cause and treat the problem. We can often find treatments that will resolve the problem completely. Other times, it may be necessary to accommodate the area of pressure to suit your lifestyle.

How can I prevent corns & calluses?

  • Wear proper-fitting shoes. Shoes that are too tight or too loose can lead to pressure and friction that causes the built-up of hyperkeratotic tissue.
  • Apply soft cushioning or pads to toes that are contracted and pushing on your shoes.
  • Find a high quality accommodative insert for your shoes. We can help you find some or create a custom orthotic to fit your foot. Avoid adding extra padding or cushions underneath high-pressure areas. This will increase the formation of calluses. Padding should go around high-pressure areas to offload them.
  • Use a foot cream on a daily basis. A podiatrist can provide you with guidance on which lotions and creams are appropriate for your feet.
