Athlete’s Foot

Athlete's foot infection

Athlete’s foot infections, also know as Tinea Pedis, is caused by a fungus that attacks the skin of the feet. Although it is commonly referred to as “athlete’s foot,” this infection is not unique to people who participate in sports. It can affect people who are both young and old, active and sedentary. Often beginning as a mild irritation or itchy, dry skin, tinea pedis can progress into a very serious problem.

What are the symptoms of athlete’s foot?

  • Itchy, moist skin between the toes – the infection often begins in the wet, sweaty area between the toes. It may appear white with skin peeling which can sometimes progress to skin wounds. The area is often very itchy and occurs most often between your 4th and 5th toes.

  • Bad foot odor – malodor is often one of the first complaints associated with tinea pedis infections

  • Scaly, red rash – typical athlete’s foot infections appear as a red or pink rash on the bottom of the feet and between the toes, often with dry scaly skin that flakes off. You may notice itchiness when you remove your shoes. This rash can sometimes be mistaken for dry skin or eczema.

  • Blisters and ulcers – severe, untreated infections can sometimes develop blisters or wounds. It is essential that these get treated by a podiatrist immediately.

Athlete’s foot is contagious and can spread to other parts of your body such as your hands and groin. Good hygiene is important while treating this condition to prevent the spread of the fungus to yourself or other people. You should see your podiatrist for effective treatment of athlete’s foot.

How to prevent your feet from being infected:

  • Cleanse your feet regularly – don’t just let water run over them in the shower. Give them a thorough cleaning daily.
  • Keep your feet dry, especially between the toes
  • Change your socks regularly
  • Wear shoes with good ventilation

  • Protect your feet in shared spaces – you should wear protective shoes or sandals wherever a fungal infection could be passed such as in public gyms or bathrooms or while showering at a hotel.

  • Don’t share your shoes/sandals
