Arthritis
Arthritis is a joint disorder that can cause stiffness, pain and dysfunction in your feet due to inflammation of the joint and surrounding tissues. It is one of the most common complaints that podiatrists treat but is one of the most misunderstood by patients. There are many different types of arthritis that can affect your feet and they often respond or present themselves in different ways. Although not all forms of arthritis have a cure, proper diagnosis and treatment will give you the ability to return to better function and live a happier life.
Why do I have arthritis?
The cause of arthritis can vary widely. Often arthritis is hereditary and cause be the result of traits that were passed to you by your parents. Biomechanical factors and your activity can also contribute to some forms of arthritis. Some systemic disorders that affect your bones and metabolism can also result in the formation of arthritis in your joints. For example, severe psoriasis can sometimes result in the development of psoriatic arthritis, which can affect the joints of your feet. Some forms of arthritis can be caused by infections that spread to the joints and require immediate treatment with antibiotics and, sometimes, surgery.
